Port Talbot has been shaped by industry for over a century. At its peak in the 1960s, the steelworks employed 18,000 people, the single biggest employer in Wales.

On 30 September 2024, the final blast furnace fell silent, ending more than 100 years of primary steelmaking. Almost 75% of the workforce, around 2,800 people, lost their jobs. It was the end of an era.

But Port Talbot's people have always known how to dig in. The demolition crews, the retraining programmes, the community pulling together. That resilience is what this town is built on. And what is being built here next is significant.

Construction has begun on a £1.25 billion electric arc furnace, backed by £500 million from the UK Government and scheduled for commissioning at the end of 2027. When complete, it will cut the steelworks' carbon emissions by approximately 90%. Over 1,000 foundation piles, some up to 28 metres deep, are already in the ground. More than 360,000 tonnes of material have been excavated from the site. This is a multi-year build with contractor teams on site now.
